π§‘π Have you noticed all of the orange around the city today? Maastricht is getting ready for King’s Day (Koningsdag) tomorrow, 27th April! ππ§‘
Since the Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy we celebrate our ruling monarch; for a century as Queen’s day for successively Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix. But since Willem-Alexander ascended to the throne we celebrate King’s Day.
Well, we… it all looks like the usual ‘tribes’ within Dutch society all have their own party, but of course that fits the ‘national’ character very well!
πFor the party people, King’s Night offers public concerts in many cities. For families and children especially, the parks will be filled with impromptu markets and music. For the monarchists, there is the visit of the royal family, televised nationally and over by lunchtime. After two corona induced postponements, the king, queen Maxima and their three daughters will visit Maastricht. Crowds and security will be overwhelming, but of course the entire spectacle is a once in a lifetime experience – so why not put on something orange, wave the red-white-blue and enjoy the Dutch partying! π€΄πΈπ§‘
