On this day, according to the gospel, Jesus was taken up to heaven and reunited with his father. These days, most people have this Thursday off, use one vacation day to have the Friday off and have a four day weekend in springtime.
The church pictured used to be called Christ’s Ascension and was built during the postwar building boom. The new city quarters were all conceived as new parishes, all with a Catholic church in the center. But church attendance fell dramatically from the 1960’s on and most of these modern churches have been closed or repurposed. This one is now used by the Armenian Christians, happy to have a church in the town dedicated to their fellow Armenian Saint Servaas.
